PYP3 | The Stories of Geography

In the month of October, students in PYP 3 have been working hard on improving their reading and writing skills. All students have participated in a reading and writing workshop. Students in PYP 3 have also begun a new Unit. The central idea for our new unit is Maps allow people to understand their place in the world.

As part of the reading and writing workshop, students from PYP 4 came to visit and share stories they created with PYP 3 students. PYP 4 students shared the process of brainstorming, planning, drafting, editing and finally publishing a story. PYP 3 students were excited to share their editing skills and look forward to publishing partner books (biographies) in the month of November and sharing them with PYP 2 students.

Students participated in a reading workshop in which the students were taught a five-finger book choice strategy. Students choose a book using the five finger strategy, determining which level would be right for them, and a reading assessment with a teacher to verify the students reading level using this new strategy.

During the month of October Students in PYP 3 began a Unit that focuses on Maps. Students were given the opportunity to show knowledge of Geography. To introduce the Unit, the students were given the challenge to draw out a map of the front yard playground to determine their precious knowledge. The students then got to explore what they already know about maps and what they would like to continue to explore and inquire about. 

Since we are an international school, with students coming from all over the globe, we explored the world map, discussing and identifying the different continents. The students also got to share and put a pin on the map, stating where they were from. This was a really fun and interesting lesson, learning about where everyone comes from and seeing how spread out our cultures and countries are.
