Poetry Day 2023
By Harveen Cucarano
LIS Poetry Day was celebrated on 6th October 2023, where the theme was ‘The Environment’. Events such as such allow students to express themselves “with the aim of supporting linguistic diversity through poetic expression.” (UNESCO, 1999).
Library activities in relation to Poetry Day promoted learning and developing confidence in writing, storytelling, working together and performance. In return, it allowed the students to identify the different types of poems they could venture into, through which they took the initiative to dive into their own version of poetic expression. Some classes took the opportunity to conduct lessons with regard to the event and write up a poem as a whole.
The Library received many submissions, both from PYP and MYP, upon which Ms Jo and Ms Harveen selected 4 winning poems which expressed the theme well.
You’ll find the poems attached below.
All participants were handed a certificate of participation by our Curriculum Coordinator, Ms. Jo and MYP Coordinator Ms. Lesley to their respective year groups. Bookmarks were presented to the writers of the 4 winning poems.
The Library would like to extend our gratitude to all students and teachers who have welcomed this day through their poem submissions.
