The Student Council through the eyes of the MYP5s
By Oliver Green, Bara Beranova and Ryan Ewongkem Epah
The student council is a great way for students and teachers to communicate, share ideas with each other, and become the driving force behind initiatives, events, and advocacy efforts that shape the school environment.” That is the main purpose of the Student Council. As this is our last year at LIS, we took the task of being in charge of the student council seriously and with pride, and tried our best to organise activities and awareness campaigns to improve the environment in our school.
Besides being a great initiative for community-improving events, the Student Council provides students with the opportunity to develop as leaders by organising and carrying out out-of-school and school activities. This was especially meaningful for us, as we were the main organisers of the Student Council, taking the roles of the Secretary, Vice President and President respectively. As the MYP5s in the Student Council, we aimed to coordinate the meetings and how they are structured, in order to ensure that the feedback from the students is appropriately conveyed to the teachers.
During the first term of the 2023/2024 school year, the Student Council aimed to improve the school environment in a variety of ways, one of which was by organising a cleaning duty in the lunchroom.
Even though the cleaning duty doesn’t sound like a very glamorous task, we recognised the importance of this job for the atmosphere of the school, and put it forth as an idea to focus on. The cleaning duty was a project which we organised during November through April. Organising the Cleaning Duty consisted of three main tasks: contacting the lunchroom staff, organising the schedule, and getting to the action. Contacting the staff was not an issue, however, it was a large task setting up a proper schedule for the tasks, and making sure that everyone tends to the tasks. The schedule was eventually set up according to everyone’s needs, and the action started. This project was received with optimism by all members of the school, as it significantly improved the lunchroom environment for both students and staff.
The 2023 / 2024 school year was a great way to inspect the way we have grown throughout our time in the Lund International School, and how we have developed the ability to make better choices regarding the working environment and our impact on others. Thanks to the help of all other members of the Student Council we promoted a safe school environment, ensured that we work in clean conditions, and almost all members of the school now feel welcome when they enter the school. We are glad we could help promote a healthy learning atmosphere, and be a part of a constantly evolving community.
