Creating Study Tips for MYP Students
By Amir Kattach
During the MYP curriculum, it can be quite difficult to keep up with the plethora of subjects that are taught. Being able to use the correct study techniques is a vital part of successful learning, whether you are a new MYP student, attending your first few weeks of MYP1 or an MYP5 student finishing up your personal project. As IB learners, we must have a solidified understanding of how to apply the skills we learn during lessons when it comes to assignments, and formative, or summative assessments. Having a support guide when it comes to the application of the correct study techniques facilitates learning and overall aids, students when the difficulty of the material is increased.
To help students in their learning and understanding of material during their time in the MYP, we spent time creating a website with study techniques and advice from us students who have now completed the MYP. We sought to provide support to any new students and make the transition from the PYP to the MYP more palatable for all students. To start, we sat down and brainstormed different study techniques that we implemented for each of the subjects we studied at LIS. This would vary, from revision techniques that we use in memorising scientific terms for science tests, to websites we find beneficial when trying to understand a difficult maths concept.
We used our transform skills and took the ideas that we had been using throughout our time in the MYP, and laid them out in a coherent manner to formulate a shortlist of tips that we would add for each subject. We would then write a short explanation for each study tip, to help justify its benefits as well as upload many youtube videos that we enjoyed watching and that helped us during our learning.
We wanted to make this info readily available on a website, as with the increase in technology usage, we found that a website would make all these tips available whenever the students wanted support. It would be easily accessible and helpful for any challenges they may face during the MYP. Learning how to organise information on a website was one of the challenges we faced, but we were able to narrow down the aesthetics and not only make a website that contained beneficial information but also was aesthetically appealing and fun to look at.
Overall, this activity benefits both us as MYP5 students in reflecting on our time at the school, and any other students who need any assistance in their learning and understanding.
